Discussion:
Using iWar over VoIP

Hey everyone,

I've been working on getting iWar to work over VoIP and been having some
difficulty. First let me tell you about my setup.

I'm using a GrandStream HandyTone-286 ATA [1] with my modem plugged into
that. I've got my provider configured in the ATA as well as configured the
codec to use as 'PCMU' (which based on the documentation I could find its
G.711u). The modem I'm using is a USR 56k external.

The modem dials fine however never seems to detect anything. Voice, Busy,
Carrier - nothing.

Has anyone else run into this before using a similar setup?

Are you disabling data compression? Also try connecting to a known modem (I
recommend Compuserve dialups) at 300 baud and see if it will connect.

I have disabled data compression and I am attempting to dial into NetZero's
dial in pool. I can hear the modem tones through the speaker but my modem
just never registers.

I did also try at 300 baud and I'm getting the same result. Strange that I
can hear the modem but it doesn't register.

Something is getting garbled... what kind of latency are you running
between the ATA and your outbound provider? If you can, make sure all
other codecs in the ATA are disabled and the only ones enabled are
ULAW/ALAW. If there are fax settings there, you might need to adjust
those as well as the gain settings (I know I had to with my PAP2's).
You want a good solid tone without overmodulation of the audio with as
constant latency as possible (don't try running bittorrents while modeming).

You are forcing 300 bps right? AT&N1 I think is the 300bps upper limit
command. If you hear your modem trying to auto negotiate upward, then
it's probably erroring out or timing out. If it's a timing issue, you
may need to reset the S register for the connect timeout.

If it connects and then they disconnect you, make sure you can connect a
few more times... then up the baud rate with the at&n command...
sometimes ISP's will disallow anything under 2400 bps as it's a waste of
their modem pool. Hence why I mention the compuserve dialups (classic
service) as they are a old school X.25 PDN that accepts any speed.

ATX4 will give you the result codes you're looking for... If your modem
is a USR Courier, you can get additional information out of the modem
including DSP and Signal/Noise information. Just type AT? to find out how.

ps: sometimes you also land on a crappy circuit at the outbound
provider... happens to us from time to time when we call russia
(GIN/Sprintnet) using voipbuster or into india.

somedays a redial gets you to a better trunk, somedays you're fucked for
a few hours while congestion runs it's course, sometimes you're fucked
for weeks because the good trunk has a higher routing cost which vsp's
avoid using. that's where it helps trying it out on a few different
providers... asterisk is good about call routing like that..

Another trick I used is that I have a 300 bps sound file with modulated
text (actually it's a 1980's Information Society track) on my asterisk
so when I call a extension from my modem, I can tune the gain and
settings on an ATA and make sure the modem decodes the text properly
without any garble.

Yep. On the PAP2's, this is *99 .. So, your dial string will
look like ATDT*99w1-NPA-NXX-XXXX.

I believe ATX4 will give you the classic information. The
Couriers support (I believe) up to ATX7 which add things like "RINGING"
and "VOICE". If you're not getting _any_ result codes, you might want
to try resetting the modem back to factor (usually AT&F0) and double
checking your registers. If those look fine but your still not seeing
_any_ result codes (ATQ0) then you might have a faulty modem.

iWar also ships with a 300.wav and 1200.wav files. Both these
playback "This is a test" or something along those lines. If you want
to try this trick to "tune" the modem settings, those are out there.
